Our Story

A Legacy in the Heart of Spartanburg

Since 1941, The Piedmont Club has been a gathering place for Spartanburg's business, civic, and community leaders. Housed in the historic Montgomery House, the Club has evolved alongside the city it serves while remaining rooted in gracious hospitality, meaningful relationships, and a tradition of exceptional dining.

1893 - The Montgomery House

Construction is completed on the Queen Anne-style Montgomery House, one of Spartanburg's most distinctive residences. Designed by Walter Scott Montgomery for his brother Victor, the home quickly becomes known for its elegant architecture and third-floor ballroom built for entertaining.

1939 - 1940
A House on the Move

To make room for the Springdale Dairy Depot, the Montgomery House is moved nearly 200 feet to its present location. Rolled on logs and pulled by mule teams, the remarkable relocation preserves one of Spartanburg's architectural treasures.

1941 - The Piedmont Club is Founded

As Spartanburg's thriving textile industry brought more business to the city, leaders recognized the need for a welcoming place where visitors and local professionals could gather, dine, and build relationships. With the support of the Montgomery family, The Piedmont Club was established in the Montgomery House, where it remains today.

1949
A Permanent Home

After several years leasing the property, the Club purchased the Montgomery House, securing its permanent home without incurring debt—a milestone that reflected both careful stewardship and confidence in the Club's future.

1970 to 2001 - Growing with the Membership

As membership expanded, the Club acquired neighboring properties and completed thoughtful additions that created new dining rooms, private event spaces, and gathering areas while respecting the character of the historic home.

1988
Welcoming a Broader Community

The Club adopted a non-discrimination article in its bylaws, reflecting its commitment to welcoming members from diverse backgrounds and perspectives while continuing to strengthen the community it serves.

Today - Continuing the Tradition

More than eighty years after its founding, The Piedmont Club remains an important part of downtown Spartanburg. Members gather to enjoy exceptional dining, celebrate family traditions, host business and community events, and continue a legacy built on hospitality, connection, and community.
